Women's Archery Compound Bows

Ever since Holless Wilbur Allen sent the United States Patent Office the first copyright request for a compound bow in 1966, bow manufacturers have been trying to find ways to make compound bows better. While archers are still mainly male, more women are taking up the sport or heading to the field to hunt with a compound bow. Manufacturers offer numerous styles of compound bows for women.

How do you select a compound bow for a woman?
  • Determine the dominant eye - Women archers need to know if their right or left eye is dominant so that they can select the right compound bow.
  • Choose draw length - The woman should stand against a wall with her arms stretched out at her sides to measure her bow draw length. A friend should measure from the end of one middle finger to the end of the other on the woman. Then, divide that figure by 2.5 to get the estimated draw length. Note that many compound bow manufacturers make compound bows for women archers with adjustable draw lengths, which is a great option for those women who are still growing.
  • Pick axle length - Compound bows that are longer from one axle to the other are more forgiving, but those that are shorter are easier to handle in tight spots when hunting. Shorter compound bows are easier to carry through the hunting field.
  • Contemplate draw weight - Draw weight is the measurement of how much weight the woman can pull the string back all the way, and it generally increases with practice. Therefore, consider those bows with large draw weight adjustment ranges. Many states have hunting regulations on draw weights. The higher the draw weight, the flatter the arrow will fly, which is helpful in hitting targets.
  • Select brace height - Those with higher braces are easier to shoot for archers.
  • Consider arrow speed - Arrow speed is measured in feet per second. Generally, compound bows with higher speeds shoot flatter and have better penetration, increasing the kill rate of animals or hitting the target at the archery range.
What is different between archery target bows and hunting bows?

There are differences between bows meant to kill animals and those bows meant to hit the bull's-eye at the range. Generally, those meant for field use have a higher draw weight because these women hunters want all the power they can muster to swiftly kill the animal. Additionally, hunters may shoot four to five arrows from the hunting bow four to five times a day, allowing them to spend extra energy drawing the string while target archery requires repeatedly pulling the string. Furthermore, the selection of colors in hunting bows is usually more limited than those found in target bows. Draw lengths are generally shorter on target bows. Finally, archery target bows for women are usually longer as they are more stable while bows for the field are usually shorter, making them easier to carry.
