Jeep Cherokee Wheel Lugs

The rugged Jeep Cherokee and its sibling, the Grand Cherokee, are well-known SUVs. If you own one of these vehicles and want to give it a personal touch, new rims and lug nuts will do the trick. There are just a few things you need to know about Jeep Grand Cherokee wheel lugs before you buy.

What is the bolt pattern of the Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The bolt pattern is an expression of the number of lug nuts on each wheel and the size of the circle they are set in. The bolt pattern of the smaller Jeep SUV may be either 5 by 114.3 or 6 by 139.7, depending on the model. For the Grand Cherokee, the pattern is 5 by 114.3 before 1999 and 5 by 127 from 1999 forward.

The first number of the bolt pattern is the number of lugs per wheel, so most SUVs in this family have five. They form a circle that is 114.3, 127, or 139.7 millimeters in diameter.

What are the specs for Grand Cherokee lug nuts?

The specs that directly affect the fit are the seat type, thread size, and thread pitch. Depending on the rims you use, the length and the diameter of the lug nuts may also be factors.

  • Thread size and pitch: Depending on the age of your Jeep, thread size and pitch may be given in standard or metric terms. The diameter of the wheel stud, including the thread, is the thread size. This may be listed as 1/2 or 14, meaning a diameter of .5 inches or 14 millimeters. Thread pitch is given in threads per inch or the distance in millimeters between the threads. For the Jeep Grand Cherokee, this dimension is 20 threads per inch or 1.5 millimeters. Lug nuts must have the same thread pattern as the bolts.
  • Seat type: Seat type is a description of the shape of the nut where it tightens against the wheel. The factory lug nut of a Grand Cherokee has a conical seat. If you put new rims on your Jeep, the factory parts may not fit. Some may require ball seats or flat seats.
  • Length: As a general rule, lug nuts need to be long enough to engage at least as far as the bolt is wide. If your rims have a hubcap that covers the nuts, you may need a short lug style called “under-hub.”
  • Diameter: The diameter of the lug nuts may come into play if your wheels require a spline drive nut. The spline drive style is designed to work with wheels that have a narrow opening for the lugs to fit through.
  • Wheel locks: A locking lug nut on each wheel can protect against theft. Sometimes called a wheel lock, this style requires a special key for removal.
  • Color: Wheel lug nuts in black, chrome, red, and other colors are available for the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
