Considered the "6th Greatest Gadget" by PC World in 2005, about 60 million StarTACs were sold. The phone resembles the Star Trek Communicator.

Motorola offered an optional battery.

The larger capacity lithium-ion battery was one of the original phone's selling points. Most people were used to lower capacity batteries like a NiMH.

Models like the StarTAC III include GPS and support for MP3s. A base model StarTAC 3000 has an LED display and side buttons.

People give credit to Motorola for making the StarTAC as the first phone to help bring mobile phones to the forefront of public awareness.
