The Jordan Trunner Sneakers

Jordan Trunner Sneakers

This silhouette was first introduced in the early 2000s. After decades of dominance as a basketball shoe, the Trunner was Jordan Brand's first attempt at moving into the cross-training arena. Jordan's original trainer/running shoe — hence the "Trunner" moniker — was released soon after the Air Jordan 15. It took some design cues from the AJ15, including woven material along the mid-panels and mesh on the collar and toebox. The Jordan Trunner's most characteristic features are a dual-strap closure for a more secure, lockdown-style fit, an IU midsole and a rubber outsole.

The Jordan Trunner: Is It a Trainer or a Runner?

The Trunner was a harbinger of Jordan Brand's move into other sports. Still, few expected it to make a comeback until Jordan Brand's surprise announcement in 2017 that the Trunner LX would be a silhouette in the Black History Month collection, alongside the Air Jordan Retro 1 High for men and women.

The Jordan Trunner can run the gamut from $50 to $1,000, depending on style, size and collectibility.

The LX reissue has a woven mesh upper that gives the silhouette a unique look, combined with standout dual hook-and-loop straps on the sides and midfoot.

The Jordan Trunner's signature Black History Month colorway is draped in black with complimentary touches of white hitting the frontside outsole and toe area, with gold accents landing on the heel area and branding.

Collectibility and Value of the Jordan Trunner

The Jordan Trunner OVO silhouette (AH9110-023), created to celebrate the opening of Jordan Brand's first-ever flagship store in Toronto, is one of the rarest designs. Only 280 pairs were made of this two-toned white and black colorway with gold accents, completing the Canadian crew's famous motif. A new pair can go for over $400 on eBay.

But it's a new-in-box pair of Jordan Trunner LX High Triple Black (AA1347-010) that's arguably the most sought-after silhouette, fetching up to $1,000.

Air Jordan Trunner: Colorways and Schemes

The Jordan Trunner colorways mix subtle muted schemes with vivid, unexpected ones. The Jordan 11 Trunner LX (453843-002) is one of the former, with black accents on the heel pull tab, forefoot strap and quarter panel's Jumpman logo. White covers the majority of the midsole. The Jordan Trunner LX BG "White" (897996-100) is another low-key colorway, featuring a mix of White/Pure Platinum on the upper and Pure Platinum on the midsole and tongue.

The Jordan Trunner LX Energy "Solar Red" (917424-605) sits on the brighter end of the spectrum. A vibrant Solar Red completely wraps the upper and is highlighted by Metallic Silver accents and 3M reflective detailing. The Jordan Zoom Trunner "Ultimate Rage Green" (CJ1495-300) is another eye-catcher, dressed in a Rage Green/Black/Vivid Purple/Volt color scheme. The neon green mesh base features a "Trunner Ultimate" tag on the medial paired and a black caged overlay on the midsole. Other details include 3M reflective detailing on the toe and heel and a black rubber outsole.

Michael Jordan's days at the University of North Carolina are celebrated with the Jordan Alpha Trunner "University Blue/Black/White" colorway (407582-402). University Blue dominates the breathable synthetic mesh upper, while black and red accent the shoe throughout. The inner liner and midsole are in white, and a black rubber outsole caps off the look.

One of the most striking colorways is the HTM x Jordan Trunner NXT React (CT2819-001), a special collaboration between Nike's CEO, Mark Parker, and legendary designers Hiroshi Fujiwara and Tinker Hatfield. This version sports a multicolor pixel graphic on the upper, hidden lacing and a color-pop heel tab. Initial branding adorns the tongue, and a Jumpman embellishes the lateral. A React midsole encased in an openwork cage and a two-tone rubber outsole finish it off.

Construction and Design of the Jordan Trunner

Various iterations of the Jordan Trunner followed that surprise LX reissue.

The Jordan Trunner Ultimate is a speed-focused training shoe emphasizing explosiveness and responsiveness and was designed for endurance-style events like 5k-15k conditioning runs. The Trunner Ultimate's design was meant to support linear and lateral movements inherent in the workout routines of team athletes. A diamond-shaped cage helps create side-to-side stability, and the responsive cushioning comes from a visible, full-length Air Zoom unit and an extra forefoot unit. Flight Fin technology, first introduced with the Trunner NXT, makes for a smooth transition from heel to toe, and a form-fitting, one-piece mesh upper completes the shoe.

The Jordan Alpha Trunner low-top, first released in 2010, kept many of its predecessor's design elements. However, it did change the weave of the mesh, and (surprisingly) it eliminated the Trunner LX's iconic double-strap system in favor of more conventional lacing.

The Jordan Trunner NXT is designed for larger athletes on training runs. The extended heel fin is a distinct design aesthetic and enhances heel-to-toe transitions. The shoe is also built for high-speed drills that require hard cuts like cone and shuttle drills, with the support of a diamond-shaped cage that helps stabilize the feet during lateral moves. It also features incredibly responsive cushioning and a breathable, lightweight upper.

The Jordan Trunner NXT React is a variation on the NXT and is designed for road running. It features a lightweight, breathable mesh upper and a then-new technology called Nike React cushioning. The NXT React strips most of the material away from the original NXT model, but the mesh remains to keep the build well-ventilated and a bit lighter. The full-length rubber outsole is a characteristic not typically expected in running shoes.
