Ford F-250 Exhaust Systems

Diesel vehicles, such as the Ford F-250, can become more efficient with a performance exhaust system. During the transmission of exhaust, a performance system frees up barriers to airflow, sometimes adding several horsepower to the F-250. If you drive an F-250 and are not sure where to begin, below are several questions to help you understand the different types of exhaust systems available.

While a standard exhaust crimps the pipes to bend them in a process called crush bending, performance exhaust systems for both gasoline and diesel vehicles use a different process called manifold bending to create curves. These curves leave more space for the exhaust to flow from the engine.

Performance exhaust systems increase efficiency by decreasing the amount of work the truck has to do to rid itself of its exhaust. Normally, due to the process of crush bending pipes and the use of overall smaller diameter piping, the engine has to push harder to expel exhaust. However, with more room to flow with a performance exhaust system, the engine does not need to do as much work to push the exhaust out.

For Ford models, including Ford F-250s, there are three main types of exhaust systems. These systems are:

• Header-back: Header-back systems derive their name from the fact that every component from the header back is replaced, unlike other systems that only replace some components.
• Cat-back: Cat-back systems replace everything from the catalytic converter back, increasing efficiency without requiring as many replacements.
• Axle-back: These systems only replace equipment from the rear axle back, resulting in about the same efficiency as other systems, but providing a more pleasant sound.

Typically, exhaust system parts designed to fit Ford trucks will be made out of one of two materials. These are:

• Mild Steel: Mild steel is lightweight and good for moderate climates where the parts will not face much risk from corrosion or rust.
• Stainless Steel: Stainless steels durability helps it resist wear from corrosion and rust to last longer in harsh conditions.

There are three main types of configurations for Ford truck exhausts as well as several other variations between them. The three main types are:

• Single exhaust: These exhausts possess only one of each part. This type of system is the standard for most cars and trucks.
• Dual exhaust: Dual exhausts have one of every part until the catalytic converter, where it then splits into two separate systems, including exhaust pipes and mufflers.
• Dual crossover: Dual crossover exhausts are essentially dual exhausts with a more balanced flow between the two exhaust pipes.
