Complete Engines for Dodge Daytona

The Daytona is a sports car manufactured by Dodge, a U.S. based manufacturer of automobiles and trucks. The Daytona was manufactured from 1983 to 1993 and available from 1994 to 1993. Today, there are engine parts and entire engines available for installation in the Dodge Daytona.

What type of engine did the Daytona use?

The Daytona originally used a 2.2L Chrysler K naturally aspirated engine with either 93 horsepower for the normal model or up to 125 horsepower for the turbo. The turbo was increased in 1985 to 146 horsepower, and a 2.5L, 100-horsepower engine was introduced in 1986. These engines were manufactured in large quantities and were used on a number of Chrysler family automobiles, including Dodges. This means that when searching for a complete engine, or parts, you do not need to look for a specific Daytona engine but merely a compatible engine from any number of vehicles.

What are some features of the Chrysler K series engines?
  • The K-series engines were inline internal combustion four-cylinder models.
  • The initial 2.2L engine featured a displacement of 135 cubic inches in a cast iron block. Both carburetor and fuel-injected models exist.
  • The turbo model variant was introduced shortly after the base variant. The biggest difference is simply the addition of a turbocharger for increased performance.
  • The 2.5L engine increased the 135-cubic inch displacement of the original to 153 cubic inches. In part, this was to add balance shafts to help reduce vibration as well as other modifications for better performance. While it initially used a different size block than the 2.2L, a common block was introduced in 1989.
What are other common vehicles that have the same engine?

The Chrysler family encompassed a number of brands popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Many of these were built with the same engine and parts as the Daytona, including the following:

  • The Dodge Shadow, Spirit, and Caravan
  • The Plymouth Sundance and Acclaim
  • The Chrysler LeBaron
What makes an engine complete?

Complete engines are sometimes called crate engines. They should contain all parts hooked up and ready to go. While it will need to be inserted into the car, a complete engine should not need repairs or other work unless clearly specified. Here are some additional things that a complete engine will often come with.

  • A VIN number from the vehicle the engine is taken from. This can help ensure you have the type of engine you need.
  • All parts needed to function and that comes with the standard engine.
  • Parts grades from the highest level A to C, the lowest but still acceptable rating.
