What Is a Network Interface Card?

A network interface card, abbreviated as NIC, is an indispensable basic device in a computer network that provides physical connectivity for data communication between computers. Whether your system runs on Windows, MacOS, or Linux, each computer must be installed with a network access card. A network interface card provides the computer with a dedicated, full-time connection to a network.

What Are the Different Types of Connectors a Network Card Interface Uses?

Network interface card is ultimately to be connected with the network, so it must have an interface that allows network cable to use it to connect with other computer network equipment. Different network interfaces are applicable to different network types. Below are the different types of connectors

  • BNC Connector: The BNC (Bayonet Neill-Concelman) connector is a miniature quick connect/disconnect radio frequency connector for coaxial cables. It features two bayonet lugs on the female connector; mating is fully achieved with a quarter turn of the coupling nut. BNC connectors work with miniature-to-subminiature coaxial cable in radio, television, and other radio-frequency electronic equipment, test instruments, and video signals.
  • RJ-45 Connector: The network interface card with RJ-45 connector works in twisted pair transmission media for Ethernet. Its interface is similar to the common telephone interface RJ-11, however, RJ-45 is eight-core, while telephone line interface is four-core, and usually uses only two cores.
  • FDDI Connector: This is an optical interface that provides 100 Mbps bandwidth and uses fibers as transmission media.

Note that, in order to apply to a wider range of applications, some network interface cards provide two or more types of interfaces.

What Is a DVR Video Capture Card and What Is It For?

  • Definition : A DVR video capture card is a PCB that fits inside a PC to allow it to take analog video signals and convert them into a digital signal for viewing on a PC. These can sometimes include TV and radio tuners too. Most often the term "video capture card" infers a single channel video input with TV or radio too. A DVR card comes with a minimum of four analog video inputs.
  • Application: DVR cards are usually for security and other such applications where you need multiple video signals to be recorded, for instance, in a security CCTV system. The software for DVR cards ranges in complexity but usually, even the most basic DVR card software includes recording to hard disk, movement detection, and alarms. Some of the video card manufacturers such as Dell and HP have DVR cards included in the PCI and PCI-E versions to enable you to use your PC for certain operations.
