Barska Mil-Dot Hunting Rifle Scopes

Mil-Dot scopes for rifles are used for everything from hunting to tactical applications. There are a few important things to know about Barska Mil-Dot rifle scopes before making your purchase.

What is a Mil-Dot reticle?

While there are a variety of optics available for hunters ranging from laser sights to illuminated scopes, the Mil-Dot reticle was designed out of a desire to provide users with the same optics and intimate sense of range they'd get from binoculars. The "mil" is a reference to the "milliradian," a military term used to gauge distance through the optics of a rifle scope. When hunting, the Mil-Dot rifle scope can help provide information that allows you to account for factors like wind speed and bullet drop.

How do you measure distance with a Mil-Dot scope?

From the center of a Barska Mil-Dot scope, the crosshairs radiate with four black dots from the center of the Barska reticle. These black dots, precisely .25 millimeters in circumference, are equally spaced apart, and each of these spaces accounts for a single milliradian. Reading the space between each of these dots should allow you to gauge the distance of an object within your optics in the same way you might with binoculars.

Many Barska rifle scopes offer variable magnifications. The accurate way to measure distance with a Barska rifle scope reticle is to set it to the highest level of magnification. The following crosshairs method of determining distance is the most commonly used.

  • Estimate the size of the object in your scope. Is it a 10-inch-tall gopher or an 18-inch-wide deer? This will give you the target size. Using illuminated rifle scopes is intended to help you estimate size in low-sight environments.
  • Set the object inside the sights of your Barska rifle scope's reticle and determine how many milliradians fit within its size. You may have to estimate the milliradians from your rifle scope's reticle if the animal can't be settled directly between two dots. This will give you the milliradian size.
  • Multiply the target size by 27.78 (You may want to round up to 28 or 30, depending on the level of precision you need with your rifle scope).
  • Divide this multiplied number by the milliradian size. This will give you the distance to the target in yards.
